Building a Permanent Home: Construction of the Original Building (1963-1967)

March, 1963

In March 1963, the decision was reached to purchase a piece of property (measuring 140′ x 290′) on the west side of the Christian Reformed Church, now known as Christ Community Church. A brand new library building, which is now known as the original building, would be designed and constructed on this site between 1966 and 1967

1966-1967: Groundbreaking and Construction

Groundbreaking and placement of the cornerstone for the new library building occurred on Saturday, October 22, 1966. The library’s new address would be 381 Montauk Highway, East Islip, NY 11730. Gertrude Schweibish continued as the library director, guiding the library through the construction of the original building, which would open its doors to the public in June of 1967.
